On Saturday, May 15th, ArtsWestchester’s Arts Bash weekend continues with an Open Studios tour throughout the various floors of The Arts Exchange, the public opening of the abstrACTION exhibition, a festive Folk Arts  Market, and free family workshops.

The Arts Exchange, a nine-story building in the heart of downtown White Plains, houses many studios for working artists and creative businesses.  Every year since The Arts Exchange was opened in 1999, ArtsWestchester has hosted an annual event where the public is invited to see a major exhibition of Westchester artists in the Arts Exchange’s first floor Grand Banking Room and then tour the studios of artists on the upper floors of the building. Arts Exchange artists work in many diverse disciplines and media. (see complete list of artists below)

“We are proud of our resident artists at The Arts Exchange, and our annual Open Studios event is an opportunity for the wider public to see all this creative energy at work,” explains ArtsWestchester Executive Director Janet T. Langsam. “During Open Studios at The Arts Exchange, visitors can get a taste of French culture at the Alliance Francaise, see the latest fashions at the Westchester Fashion Academy, re-live the glory days of baseball with the unique collection of ball-park prints at Plaine & Chamberlain, and see so many wonderful painters, sculptors, etc…at work.”

ArtsBash Open House Events Include:
The public opening of abstrACTION (12-5 p.m.). Independent curator Dara Meyers-Kingsley has compiled an exhibition of the work of fifteen artists (all with some connection to Westchester), who employ unique processes to create abstract art. This sprawling exhibition will occupy both floors of the Grand Banking Room, as well as The Arts Exchange’s sculpture court. abstrACTION includes painting, sculpture, mixed media, video and performance art.

Open Studios (12-5 pm) Artists on the sixth and eighth floors of The Arts Exchange will open their doors to the public. Open Studios is a great way for the public to meet artists face to face, and get an inside look at the creative process. (see list of participating Open Studios artists below).

Folk Arts Market (12-5 pm) ArtsWestchester’s Folk Arts Program will present a market featuring handmade folk arts and crafts. Participating artists will include The Grupo Artistico of the Mamaroneck Artists Guild, who will sell paintings and jewelry, Bernardo Domingo, a wire and bead sculpture artist from Zimbabwe, and others (tba).

abstrACTION workshops (1-4 pm) Using the abstrACTION exhibition as inspiration, artist Jessica Fuentes will lead an all age workshop in collage, while Jeannie Thomma will lead a felt making workshop. Both workshops will be designed to encourage Arts Bash Open House visitors to try their hands at creating abstract art.
